Artify Jaco is an organization that is beautifying their town through art installations and murals while supporting international and local artists.

While researching artists in Costa Rica, we came across Artify Jaco and really fell in love with what they were doing for their city Jaco. Interviewing Wendy, we learned that Jaco is a somewhat sleepy town usually either being bypassed by tourists or not holding much to its name other than surfing and yoga. A casino lives in the middle of the main street giving this city’s reputation a place for party goers. Wendy and Stuart, started this organization with the intention of making Jaco more accessible and colorful by hiring muralists locally and internationally to bring more art to their home. This is a great organization that helps their community value art and hopefully inspire others to beautify and contribute to their hometowns and public spaces. For more information please visit their website and find out how you can help continue their amazing work!

Welcome to Under the Canvas’s website! We’re so incredibly excited to begin this journey and hope you love it as much as we do. Here’s a little insight to our goals for this project:

Art is very much a big part of everyone’s life, but thinking about it further it is much more than just a hobby or a job, It is an extension of the words we cannot seem to say, our feelings that we can’t quite grasp, it brings us to life, it moves us, it’s an outlet for our emotions, and we do it because we love it, but also because it helps others understand how we see the world.

B and I are excited to not only explore the beauty of the work that is created, but also the process of what it takes to accomplish such amazing pieces. Our intention is to discover local artists as we backpack around the planet. While the art itself is an incredible piece of work, a lot of the process of how to get to that finished level is also a story worth showcasing.

Here’s a little insight to the the complexities of the mind and how our creators overcome their most challenging self in order to produce such artwork.

From this website you’ll be able to stay up to date with all of our current videos posted from our YouTube Channel and some of our favorite photographs and summary of the process, as well as information on how to contact the artists we feature along with any upcoming projects/events they may have! we hope you enjoy this journey with us! Stay Tuned!

Julie Becker is an independent tattoo artist currently living out of an airstream in Joshua Tree, CA. After being in the tattoo industry for over 20 years she’s had to take a step back to better deal with her chronic pain. Under The Canvas wanted to explore how it is for an artist to step back from the workshop but how it has encouraged her to explore new ways of making art.

It’s an artist’s dream to see the walls covered top to bottom in her interpretation of other artist’s work that had made deep impressions on her. Frida Kahlo is the most prominent figure showing up in most aspects of Julie’s artwork along with the name of her Airstream.

Making art is tedious work and physically demanding on the body, it made the most sense to cater the episode around her current struggles with chronic pain and being a tattoo artist. We wanted to focus on how her personal experience has been a constant challenge, but also allowed her to explore other avenues of art. Julie is currently traveling to Spain and New York and is taking clients while she is abroad, please contact her!
