Internationally recognized for her restoration work in Stained Glass art, Costa Rican artist Sylvia Laks describes the intricate work that she does along with balancing other interests of hers such as oil painting.

Located in a small town (Heredia) about 30min outside of San Jose in Costa Rica is Sylvia Laks gallery and workshop. Known for her great technique in stained glass painting we fell in love with her personal work as well as her oil paintings. It was such an experience seeing how much technical work and preparation is required for this type of work and we very much enjoyed learning a bit about the process of such a complex art craft. Sylvia, full of humor and wit, opened up to us about the difficulties of being a stained glass artist, and how oil painting allows her to express her creativity.

Costa Rican tattoo artist Moises Kampos describes the responsibilities of his profession along with the changing culture in his country.

While traveling to Costa Rica we were researching for artists to interview. Though there seemed to be an influx of tattoo artists, Moises Kampos work stood out amongst a sea of artists. I think what really drew us in was the mixture of his tattoo work and personal paintings showcased on his social media account, showing us a greater range to his creativity and technique. While we also required a translator for his interview his kindness and good nature was shown beyond words and we immediately gravitated towards him. Moises has been in the industry for awhile and has seen the transition and growth of the tattoo community within Costa Rica change over time, learn more about him and get insight to the life of a Costa Rican artist!

Artify Jaco is an organization that is beautifying their town through art installations and murals while supporting international and local artists.

While researching artists in Costa Rica, we came across Artify Jaco and really fell in love with what they were doing for their city Jaco. Interviewing Wendy, we learned that Jaco is a somewhat sleepy town usually either being bypassed by tourists or not holding much to its name other than surfing and yoga. A casino lives in the middle of the main street giving this city’s reputation a place for party goers. Wendy and Stuart, started this organization with the intention of making Jaco more accessible and colorful by hiring muralists locally and internationally to bring more art to their home. This is a great organization that helps their community value art and hopefully inspire others to beautify and contribute to their hometowns and public spaces. For more information please visit their website and find out how you can help continue their amazing work!
