Costa Rican tattoo artist Moises Kampos describes the responsibilities of his profession along with the changing culture in his country.

While traveling to Costa Rica we were researching for artists to interview. Though there seemed to be an influx of tattoo artists, Moises Kampos work stood out amongst a sea of artists. I think what really drew us in was the mixture of his tattoo work and personal paintings showcased on his social media account, showing us a greater range to his creativity and technique. While we also required a translator for his interview his kindness and good nature was shown beyond words and we immediately gravitated towards him. Moises has been in the industry for awhile and has seen the transition and growth of the tattoo community within Costa Rica change over time, learn more about him and get insight to the life of a Costa Rican artist!

Paulina Jaimes is a fantastic painter working with various mediums. While painting comes easily to her, she still finds new ways to enhance her skills as an artist and to always evolve and learn. Paulina lives in the heart of Mexico City and is more widely known for her oil and watercolor paintings.

In the center of Mexico City is Paulina Jaimes Pintora’s art studio/home surrounded by a collection of her artwork. Texture and light are what she loves to highlight in her work, being the daughter of two painters she grew up learning how to work the materials naturally. She opened up to us about how she experiments with various techniques (some of which are considered very ancient), so naturally we wanted to know more. We figured for the artists community it was important to encourage others to always continually explore and be a student in something new. Paulina opened up about how exploration helped her specifically better achieve her vision and the various benefits of having multiple mediums to work with.

Floria Gonzalez is a photographer and videographer based in Mexico City. Her photographs require a lot of time, preparation, and experience. Here we were able to go behind the scenes with her and witness the amount of work that goes into putting together a photo shoot.

When looking at Floria Gonzalez’s work we not only fell in love with the creativity within her work but also the mystery of everything behind it, we were told she didn’t use photoshop very much which made us question how she managed to accomplish certain aspects, we couldn’t wait to interview her!

During our time with Floria we not only had the amazing opportunity to watch and film one of her photoshoots, giving us huge insight to how one image becomes a full production. Watch her episode to learn more!

Neither of us had heard of Abraham Jimenez, but after meeting Horacio (Episode 4), we became good friends and he pointed us in the direction of several incredible artists in Mexico, one of them, being Abraham. In Xochomilico, just south of the city, we were greeted warmly by his family and friends. We enjoyed getting to know one another and taking the time to look at his incredible work. His most recent work had us floored in the amount of detail and work that went into each piece. His canvases are huge and look like photographs but are instead all oil paintings. Though there was a language barrier, Abraham has a warm and humorous personality and so easy to connect with. What was most special was feeling so close to someone without having to exchange many words.

Painter Horacio Quiroz lives in Mexico City. While preparing for his first solo art show “Polarities” at Booth Gallery in New York, he described his thoughts on being a self taught artist and how being more internationally recognized has helped his artwork grow. Not exactly or deliberately painting queer art, he looks back on his past as an inspiration to what he paints today. Horacio specializes in oil painting and continues to grow quickly in popularity and skill.

We had our hearts set on Horacio Quiroz for some time while we were still putting this project together back in SF. We were thrilled that he was the first artist from Mexico who agreed to be a part of our series and couldn’t be blessed to know him further as a person. At first glance looking at his artwork, the audience is left wondering what sort of mind produces such incredible yet complex work. We decided to focus his episode on how his style was influenced by discovering his sexuality at a young age, and prepping for his first solo show in New York. Horacio’s deep thoughtful insights about himself was exactly what we were looking for and couldn’t be more thankful to find not only an incredibly talented artist but also one who is humble and willing to share a deeper side to themselves. It’s an artist’s dream to see the walls covered top to bottom in her interpretation of other artist’s work that had made deep impressions on her. Frida Kahlo is the most prominent figure showing up in most aspects of Julie’s artwork along with the name of her Airstream.

Making art is tedious work and physically demanding on the body, it made the most sense to cater the episode around her current struggles with chronic pain and being a tattoo artist. We wanted to focus on how her personal experience has been a constant challenge, but also allowed her to explore other avenues of art. Julie is currently traveling to Spain and New York and is taking clients while she is abroad, please contact her!

We’re excited to bring one of our dearest friends into this second episode! Justin has been a huge supporter of this series and is our music supervisor for all the great music you’ll hear in each episode! Having an infectious personality that is equally colorful to the many talents he has, our primary focus for his episode was to center it around the multiple projects he is consistently doing and how that shapes his life as an artist. While exploring various avenues of creativity he struggles most with keeping on top of multiple projects, but in the long run has found it to fit perfectly to his energetic personality. We hope Justin’s episode will help others realize there is an ebb and flow to the time that you put into your work, and with multiple projects it’s okay for them not to all be accomplished at once.
